Urban Monkeys program, porto alegre, brazil

The Urban Monkeys Program (Programa Macacos Urbanos) is a multi-disciplinary team, using research, community engagement, and political activism to conserve the brown howler monkey and its habitat in the south of Porto Alegre, Brazil. The southern part of the city used to be a rural area, but increasing urban development has modified the environment and the monkeys now live in a neighborhood that continues to expand. Due to the proximity to humans, conflict arose. The Urban Monkeys Program has been investigating, monitoring, and managing this conflict and the brown howler monkeys' behavior in the area since 1993. Many researchers and citizens participate in this program, which is run by the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul with the support of the SEMA-Fundação Zoobotânica do Rio Grande do Sul.
