Northern elephant seals, California, USA
I took the photos presented here in the Piedras Blancas Rookery in San Simeon, CA in 2018 and 2019. These photos show the behavior of northern elephant seals during their mating season. Piedras Blancas is a great example of the Elephant Seal population recovery. The first pup was born in the rookery in 1992. Since then, increasing numbers of elephant seals arrive every year during the mating season, with about 23,000 elephant seals returning to the rookery to breed.
